Find Out More: Room Darkening OR Blackout

Blackout blinds is the phrase often used to describe the atmosphere created where it’s difficult to see in front of you. Room darkening shades describe the fabric opacity of window coverings where “most” of the light in the room is removed. There are a number of factors that can affect the “darkness” of your space. Fabric opacity, or how much light gets through, is one aspect. Many collections of window shades are available with room darkening fabrics. Select collection of window coverings are defined as utilizing blackout fabrics. Another factor is the type of product you choose to cover your windows, which means that certain window coverings cover and seal better than others. Finally, the make-up of your windows can play into the results, whether you need to have your room darkening blinds inside or outside mounted.

How Light Gaps Affect Room Darkening

Light gaps occur along the sides of your window shades, creating slivers of light. This can occur due to a number of reasons: the fit of the window shades, the way the shades are mounted, the type the window covering you’ve chosen and the framing of your windows. In most cases, it may not bother you–the room will still be darkened during daytime, just showing a halo effect at the edges. But, if this is a concern, before you order, consider these options: Choose a window covering that offers a channel that fits the frame of your window, like LightLock, which seals out the light. Consider window shades that have the smallest light gaps, such as our Designer Roller Shades. Talk to your window covering specialist about how they will be installed to get the best results, such as inside mount. And, finally, by adding side draperies, you can enhance the style of your space, while also blocking that halo of light.

Blackout Dual Shades

The dual shades feature is well-know for its ability to create serious darkness in homes. This option allows light-filtering shades to now offer a room darkening blinds experience, including Dual Sheer Shades. It’s quickly becoming a favorite, since it offers the widest range of light control. With the dual shade system, you get two shades on the same headrail. They operate independent of each other. When you want to enjoy your view and bring in natural light, the first shade is lowered into place for light filtering. When you want darkness and light-blocking, you lower the secondary shade, oftentimes a blackout roller shade. This lowers into place behind the first.
